Mesopotamia invented the first written language- Cuneiform, it was later enscribed on the Rosetta Stone, which is how we gained our initial understanding of Mesopotamia. It was a precursor to modern writing.
They somewhat believed in the afterlife, they thought that they became ghosts, who then simply faded into nothing. They usually did not think about the afterlife much, either. There were thousands of gods that represented multiple objects such as pickaxes, sailboats, and many other things.
The preists sometimes had more power than the king, and controlled the Irrigation systems. Preists would read the livers of chickens or lambs to see what kind of sacrifices they should perform. It seems parallel to the Aztec sacrifices, except with animals instead of humans Mesopotamia is called "The Cradle of Civilizations" because it is the first civilization in recorded history.
